1693 London, England

John Dunton publishes the first women's magazine, The Ladies' Mercury, in London; contained a question-and-answer column which became known as a "problem page."

1844 Carthage Illinois

Joseph Smith, leader and founder of the Mormon Church, is shot to death by a mob in an Illinois jail with his brother Hyrum; the Mormon Church was headquartered in nearby Nauvoo in 1839; when Mormon leaders destroyed an anti-Mormon newspaper in Nauvoo, the Smiths were jailed at Carthage to await trial. Illinois Governor Thomas Ford ordered the Carthage Grays militia unit to guard the jail from an anti-Mormon mob, but the mob overpowered the guard, entered the jail, shot the Smiths, and wounded two other Mormons, Willard Richards and John Taylor.

1905 Odessa, Russia

Mutinous Russian sailors seize the battleship Potemkin, pride of the Black Sea fleet, throwing the commander and several other officers overboard; they also give their support to revolutionaries in St. Petersburg, where the Czar's soldiers had killed 1000 people the morning of January 22; a total of 23 Mutinies within the Russian military occur this year. In 1925, the Communist Party commissioned the film The Battleship Potemkin to commemorate the Revolution of 1905. 1954 Obninsk, Russia

Opening of the world's first atomic power station at Obninsk, 107 km south-west of Moscow on the banks of the Protva River; today home of Russia's largest scientific centre involved in the study of nuclear power, with 13 research and development institutes, including MINATOM, which studies fast reactors and nuclear pumped lasers.

1976 Athens, Greece

At 12;28 am, four terrorists travelling on Peruvian and Ecuadorian passports hijack Air France Flight 139, bound from Ben Gurion Airport to Paris via Athens, with 246 passengers and 12 crew; the hijackers were members of Germany's Baader-Meinhof terrorist gang, accompanied by two operatives of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), an active cell of Yasser Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO); they burst into the cockpit armed with revolvers and grenades; and order the A-300B Airbus to Benghazi, Libya, for refueling, then on to Entebbe, Uganda, where it lands at 03:15 local time on the morning of June 28, with only a few minutes fuel left in its tanks; the hijackers demand the release of 54 terrorists jailed in six countries around the world, and in addition, the French government must pay a $5 million ransom to the PFLP; a day later they release all passengers holding non-Israeli passports; with 105 of their nationals being held hostage by Palestinian militants, the Israeli government prepares to act.
