Milestones for June 25

1857 Paris, France

Author Gustave flaubert goes on trial for offenses against public morality for his first novel, Madame Bovary, that had been serialized the previous fall in a Paris magazine; about a country doctor's wife who seeks refuge from the boredom of her existence in love-affairs and romantic yearnings, and who falls prey to disillusionment and ultimately kills herself. Flaubert will narrowly escape conviction, and starts work on his next realistic novel, Salammbo.

1876 Little Bighorn, Montana

A war party of up to 4,000 Sioux and Cheyenne Indians led by Chief Crazy Horse and Chief Gall rout the US 7th Cavalry led by Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer at the two-hour long Battle of the Little Big Horn; Custer dies along with his company of 264 men in what became known as "Custer's Last Stand"; Col. Custer was supposed to have waited two more days for reinforcements to arrive, but disobeyed General Alfred Terry's orders and split his command of the 7th Regiment of the U. S. Calvary which numbered over 650 men total into three battalions: A, M, and G commanded by Major Reno, D, H, and K under Captain Benteen's command and C, E, F, I and L calvary under Custer's leadership; Custer chose to ignore his scouts' reports about the size of the Indian encampment on the banks of the Little Big Horn River, and chose to attack, possibly because he thought the Sioux had discovered his position; the only survivor was a horse named Comanche. With the massacre occurring right before the centennial birthday of the USA, the mood changed against the Indian in Washington, and the US Army determined to seek revenge for the death of its soldiers.

1876 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Alexander Graham Bell demonstrates his new invention, the telephone, at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence; the telephone was the star attraction, as Bells first words came crackling over the telephone wire from another room.
Quote: "Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive into the woods. Every time you do so you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before. Follow it up, explore all around it, and before you know it, you will have something worth thinking about to occupy your mind. All really big discoveries are the results of thought."

1950 Korea

Korean War begins at 4 am, as 70,000 Korean People's Army troops with Russian T-34 tanks, led by General Chai Ung Jun, cross the 38th parallel in the early morning and launch a full scale invasion of the South, with seven assault infantry divisions and two independent infantry regiments; later that day, a United Nations Security Council resolution calls for an end of aggression from North Korea, and President Truman appeals to the United Nations to take "police action" against the "unwarranted" attack; two days later Truman commits the US to intervene, without first asking Congress for a declaration of war, the first time in US military history; on July 7, the United Nations creates the United Nations Command, under General Douglas MacArthur; the Korean War will last until July 27, 1953, when an armistice is signed, formally dividing the country.

1951 New York City

CBS broadcasts the first regular commercial colour TV transmissions from New York, a four-hour-long show starring Arthur Godfrey, Faye Emerson, Sam Levenson and Ed Sullivan; carried in New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, DC; the public didn't own any color TVs at the time and even CBS had only about three dozen sets on hand.

1991 Czech Republic/Slovakia

The last Soviet troops stationed in Czechoslovakia leave the country, 23 years after the Warsaw Pact invasion; on this same day, Croatia and Slovenia declare independence from Yugoslavia, plunging the federation into a violent breakup, as Serbian forces move into Croatia to "protect the Serbian minority." In its Declaration of Independence, the new Croatian Republic guaranteed not only civil rights, but unique rights to the Serbian minority; on Jan. 15, 1992, the first of the European Community members recognized the new state.
