Brothers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier
launch the world's first sustained flight from the town square of Annonay,
when their hot air balloon named Seraphina, called a "globe aerostatique,"
takes off into the sky, flying an estimated 460 metres high and 2300 metres
across country for about ten minutes, when it landed gently in a vineyard;
Seraphina was a 12 metre envelope made of wrapping fabric lined with paper,
with multiple sections held together by some 2,000 buttons; thinking that
smoke rather than hot air caused a balloon to rise, the brothers burned a
foul smelling mixture of wet straw and chopped wool. The brothers came up
with the idea after noticing how pieces of paper went up a chimney with a
fire in the hearth; they filled a small taffeta sock with smoke and watched
it float to the ceiling. Their first flight with passengers - a duck, a
rooster and a sheep - took place in the gardens of Versailles on Sept. 19,
and on Nov. 21, 1783, Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes made the
first manned flight, watched by the entire population of Paris.
