Sade in Paris, France; died at Charenton, near Paris Dec. 2, 1814; libertine,
author of erotica; spent much of life in jail for his perversions; celebrated
deviant sexual activities and challenged civilized authority - the church,
the government and all social restraints; his name has entered the language
as a definition of sexual cruelty.

Thomas Hardy 1840-1928
born in Upper Bockhampton, Dorset, England;
died in Dorchester, Dorset Jan. 11, 1928; poet, novelist; best known for
novels set in "Wessex," an imaginary county in southwestern England - The
Return of the Native (1878), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the
D'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure (1895); Jude is the story of two unhappily
married people who leave their spouses, live together and have children;
when the Bishop of Wakefield got some of Britain's booksellers to pull it
from their shelves, Hardy was so disgusted he stopped novel-writing and worked
only on poems for the rest of his life.
Edward Elgar 1857-1934
born in Broadheath, Worcestershire; died in
Worcester Feb. 23, 1934; romantic composer whose works stimulated a renascence
of English music; 1897 became famous for music he composed for Queen Victoria's
Diamond Jubilee; best known for his five Pomp and Circumstance marches, composed
between 1901 and 1930.
Johnny Weissmuller 1904-1984
born at Freidorf, near Timisoara, Romania;
grew up in Chicago; died in Acapulco, Mexico Jan. 20, 1984; freestyle swimmer,
actor; 1920s won five gold medals in swimming in the 1924 and 1928 Olympics;
also won 52 US championships and set 67 world records; first to swim 100m
freestyle in under a minute; 1932 played role of Tarzan with Maureen O'Sullivan
in Tarzan the Ape Man; 1948 their last film together was Tarzan's New York
Adventure; also starred as Jungle Jim; married five times. [picture: Johnny
